Glaze of Cathexis - Atlantean Vibrational Sound

I haven't been in much of a reviewing mood, but we're certainly in a music making mood out here.  New Electrick Sages and even a Glaze release will be trompsing your way soon, but for now, how about a journey into the past down this psychedelic road?

This compiles the trippier spoken word instrumentals and instrumentals that inhabited the corners of the proper Glaze albums.  Run this way, though - and you'll find a metaphysical swirl of astral bubbles, infinite guitars, and bongo bonks.

Glaze of Cathexis - 2018 - Grooviest Glaze (2012 - 2016)

For better or for worse, the delirious psychedelic rocking of the Glaze of Cathexis is now in our past while we continue as the plastic soul weirdos of the Electrick Sages.  These are the tunes that folks played the most as we were "glazing" and bowing at the shines of Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, and Husker Du while thinking about John Lennon and R.E.M.    The results skew a bit towards the live-wire noise rock edge of the band, but head on over to the albums at http://glazeofcathexis.bandcamp.com if you need some more baladeering and ambient instrumentals.  This release does give you a full glance at our DNA, though.  The band ran for ten years, so this is the second half of the journey.  We'll hit up some of the preliminaries at another time.  "High Desert Prophecies" video is included with this download.

Glaze of Cathexis - 2017 - Dreaming of Forgotten Stars Video

We created this video for you specifically for you. I don't always like the Youtube preview thumbnails, but I like this one. If you dig it, you will want to watch the video soundtracked by our own un-Crowley-ed fusion of Buddy Holly and Joy Division.

Glaze of Cathexis - 2017 - Bohemian Groovers

This is the final Glaze of Cathexis album.  We will still be making music over here at the garage, but it sounds different now and we'll be putting that out under the Electrick Sages name.  Here's our press release and the links for this one.

GLAZE of CATHEXIS
...are  announcing  the  release  of  their  new  album,  Bohemian  Groovers.

Ueda / Tokyo - Japan.  Roving  Sage  Media  are  thrilled  to  be  releasing  the  latest  album  from  Glaze  of  Cathexis,  titled  Bohemian  Groovers.

What you will hear is a pulsating strain of psychedelic rock, first incubated in the Kanto Plain of Japan in 2004; now reaching its final iteration here in 2017.  Visions were seen, channels were heard – the Creators have just made a quantum bounce into a different direction:  what you get is an aural photograph of a time and place unique to them.  Glaze of Cathexis are a duo embedded in the Land of Mu doing their sterling utmost to strike the right vibration of The Gong.  Dig the “Deep Forest Bells,” riding a Pixified Jesus and Mary Chain wave of mutilation cresting on Beach Boy melodies.  Dig the alternate dimension John Lennon pulse of “Pretend That We Begin.”  Or, maybe find yourself in an earphone-to-ear performance of, what seems to be Ian Curtis and the Crickets, in “Dreaming of Forgotten Stars.”  Reverberate along to “The Holy Mountain” while surfing the psychic jetstream of Alejandro Jodorowsky.  They’ve got that something special to resonate with and the psychedelic soul to drive it all home.  Beaming out to you the Bohemian Groovers.

Glaze of Cathexis are Matthew Comegys (Atlanta, USA) and Scott Atkinson (Brisbane, Australia), a collective who source and derive their creative inspiration and psycho-spiritual resonance from dwelling in Japan

And the EP that preceded the album if you missed it:

Glaze of Cathexis - 2017 - Deep Forest Bells EP

This psychedelically rockin' (and shoegazing) EP and video clip are here to herald the final Glaze of Cathexis LP coming in August.  Join us for one more run through the Glaze's soundworld of crackling fuzz guitars, unhinged drumming, and celestially trippy lyrics from their base in the mountains of Japan.  If you are groovy enough to dig our sounds, we're not closing shop - just changing gears to the Electrick Sages project.  That is what comes out of my current workflow and it sounds different than the Glaze.

Anyway, what you are getting here is one tune from the upcoming album, an alternate take of another tune from it, and several alternates of the past.  I think the alternates are all the first versions of the songs.  I like some of them quite well.  I rerecorded Lotus Pond for the front slot on an earlier EP and decided I wanted a more driving take.  'Cadmium Glow' ended up on 'The Amorphous Infinity' LP in a slower version because this electronic drum pulsing take just didn't make sense on that album.

Join us and you may find yourselves down with our trip.

Glaze of Cathexis - 2016 - The High Desert Prophecies

It's just behind the veil of illusion that tickles your senses. You catch a glimpse of it through the substance that is around you. Your ancestors may seem ignorant in the bright lights of the technological world, but a few of them got it. Let's take a tryp toward the Center fueled by primordial vibrations and rock and roll. Glaze of Cathexis is a long running psychedelic rock concern that plays off the echoes of shoegaze, John Lennon, and the Doors. Dig it.

Sorry I haven't really been updating much recently.  I've been out on my own trip (partially documented in this music) and just haven't felt the fire to crank up psychedelic obscurities and then rate them.  And if you don't feel the fire, you probably shouldn't bother.  Not to say I'm vanishing.  I may tackle the music from another angle, ramble on the metaphysical, continue with the film fests or something else.  You will find new music from us here if you want to hear it.

Now is wonderful and my creative energies are rumbling - just at a different frequency.  Let's move onto the tunes, which live at Bandcamp and are free (contributions are very welcome, but not at all required).  Here we go:

And a touch of the visual for you.  The first one is new and the second you may have caught a few months back.

Of course we hope you enjoy, but our real goal is to spark you, wake you up, and maybe even prod you to open a few new doors of enlightenment.  Shouldn't that be the goal of every musician?

Burn Down the Golden Idol (2016)

Gonna serialize our next project a bit.  The Glaze of Cathexis has peered beyond the curtain of reality and we are ready to report our findings.  Are we enlightened enough to do this properly?  Probably not.  Are we talented enough to pull this off?  We hope so, but you can been the judge of that.  We have glimpsed at the magick that stands through the textured vail.  We may not understand it, but wish to hold a musical communion with you to consider it.  Burn down the Golden Idol.

Visualizations of the Roving Sage

While my musical productivity is going only without change, we're shifting our presentation to focus more on film.  Y'know, the bizarre sort of experimental films which can fill in the background at your next 'happening.'  This is Blueshifter, the first clip from the electronically-minded 'Astral Soothsayer Part I," which will be coming your way as a 16-minute or so film and soundtrack late this year or early next year:

If you've been digging 'The Amorphous Infinity,' the whole album now has a film.  Here 'tis:

And you can find the downloadable album here:

Glaze of Cathexis - 2015 - The Amorphous Infinity

Quality: 5 out of 5
Trip-O-Meter: 4.25 out of 5

The best psychedelic rock album we've sent out into the world so far.  The past few albums have revelled in full-on 60's psychedelia, and that's not forgotten, but with this album, you'll hear a modernized, shoegazed, Sonic Youth-thunking conceptual cycle about the search for, and reclamation of the human soul in the grinding gears of modern society.  It's prog rock lyrics set to compact, catchy ditties brimming with far out drums and wires.  Jazzmasters, Casinos, Les Pauls, Strats, and bizarre Fernandes concoctions all sent into the slipstream for vistas of guitar noise.  Take a tour of the title track, Labyrinthian Alchemy, and Cadmium Glow for the quick fly-by.  Have a listen at Soundcloud, buy the thing for a paltry $2 at Bandcamp (with a vinyl option likely coming soon),  or if you're unfortunately destitute, have a look at the comments for this post.  We need to be sustainable, but we want to be heard!  We may be delusional, but we are confident that we are musical shamen looking for a way to reclaim the soul!

Glaze of Cathexis - 2015 - Desolation Spirituals EP

We tread through a path of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, and folk-rock on our new, free EP, Desolation Spirituals.  This is a warm-up and a bit of a preview for the Amorphous Infinity LP showing up at the end of July.  Join us for the left-turn Jazzmaster jangle of the title track, the cosmic American of "Silver Lad," the garage rock stomp of "The Kashmir Effect,"  and the slightly tongue-in-cheek hippy freak out of "All Free."

You can dig it over at Bandcamp:

Desolation Spirituals Video

Following our psychedelic muse a little farther, with a free EP cropping up next week and an LP next month.  Start grooving with this shoegazin' barnstormer.  Sort of our unauthorized, unasked for aural sequel to Kerouac's "Desolation Angels,"  one of me favorite books.

Glaze of Cathexis - 2015 - Trade WInd Navigators

Moving straight along to our second release, a psychedelic rock opus from long-term underground stalwarts, Glaze of Cathexis.  The tunes careen through echoes of the Beatles, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, and a host of 80’s indie rock acts.  Sharp songwriting, shamanistic lyrics, and piercing guitar parts abound.  During the writing and recording of this LP, the band members were slogging through the wilderness of uncertainty, culture clashes, and corporate skullduggery, but the results still aim at a spiritual high and a release from the darker corners of our temporal existence.  The mono mix is free, while we would dig a bit of your bling for the stereo mix.  Honestly speaking, some tracks sound better in both of the formats.
You can delve into the sound of the Glaze over at their bandcamp page:

Glaze of Cathexis - 2014 - The 2014 EPs

Rounding up some of the recordings from last year to tickle your ear.  Koans of the Paradox is from the Cryptic Hullabaloo album (which is now theoretically free, by the way), and includes a few outtakes from the sessions.  You'll hear the Focus on the Sun tunes, which are some older ones re-recorded into a full-on shoegaze blast.  Bringing us into the future is the teaser EP for the upcoming Trade Wind Navigators album, which I hope will be our Revolver backwards.  Capping everything off is a cover of the Beatles' "Octopus' Garden," which I recorded because my daughter made me put it on repeat twenty times through during a summer car ride.

We hope you dig our psychedelic vibes.  This set is completely free - but please head over to Bandcamp if you're feeling the good vibrations to support our musical vision.  Both lyricist/visual artist/shaman Scott and myself have families and professional obligations cropping up around us, and to keep the Glaze running we've got to prove that it's a real thing, so to speak.

Glaze of Cathexis - 2014 - Imaginary Beings EP

Psychedelic rock to prime you for the Glaze's full-length release, Trade Wind Navigators, due early next year.  We're on a mission of musical enlightenment for both you and us.  Dig our musical shamanism with tripped out lyrics and echoes of the Beatles, Sonic Youth, and Manuel Gottsching.  You can listen to the music over at our Bandcamp site.  It's free, but we would really appreciate any contribution you can muster if you groove to the sounds:

There's a direct download at this link:

Glaze of Cathexis - 2014 - Focus on the Sun EP

We do hope you've been grooving on the videos for our psychedelic, shoegazin' soundblast during August.  Here's the free download for the tunes.  The tunes are a little older, but the recordings are new.  We're only trickster clowns, but our goal is still to expand all beings spiritually through the sound of music.  Take the space trip with us.  Scott ripped the images out of a bunch of Japanese astronomy magazines, and I wrote the tunes in various states of strange.  "Spinning Top" is the accusatory glance that ultimately looks inward, while the title track and "Endless Sky" endeavour to open the eternal eye of the cosmos.  It all get pulled back into the nexus of the throbbing, surfy "Black Holes."  Do share your vibes with us, and please share around and spread our altruistic virus.  The road may have an ending, but we'd like to follow it as far as we can.
